Ranged attacks have a 30% chance to fire additional projectiles at up to 2 nearby enemies with 150 extra range and within a 120 degree angle in front of the attacker. The additional projectiles deal 20 + 75% damage of a normal attack and do not trigger on hit effects. The primary attack deals 20 + 100% damage of a normal attack.

Strategy

Why Buy Specialist's Array?

Some of you might remember this one from the neutral item pool. It used to drop randomly from camps as a Tier 2 neutral, and it was fine there. But Valve looked at the ranged carry landscape in 7.41 and made a decision I completely agree with — if ranged carries need a farm tool, it should be something they can actually buy, not something they hope falls out of a jungle camp at the right time. So they moved it to the shop, reworked the passive, and gave it an upgrade path. Good call.

The mechanic is called Splitshot. Every attack you make has a chance to fire additional projectiles at up to two nearby enemies in a cone in front of you. Those extra projectiles deal most of your normal attack damage but do NOT trigger on-hit effects. The primary attack also gets a slight damage bonus when the proc happens. On a ranged carry attacking a creep wave, this regularly turns single-target hits into multi-hit clears without burning mana, without a specific ability, without any setup at all. That is wave clear on demand, and wave clear is farm speed, and farm speed is games.

When to Buy Specialist's Array?

Second or third item on ranged carries who need farming efficiency before their big damage items come online. The key word is "ranged"—Splitshot is ranged only. Melee heroes get nothing from this.

The heroes who love it most are exactly the ones without built-in AoE farming tools. Drow Ranger, Sniper, Clinkz, Weaver, and Mirana are heroes who are lethal against single targets but struggle to clear waves fast enough to hit their timings. Specialist's Array patches that problem directly and cheaply.

Skip it entirely on heroes with innate multi-projectile abilities. Medusa's Split Shot, Gyrocopter's Flak Cannon, and Muerta's Gunslinger do NOT stack with Split Shot—only the higher source applies when both would trigger. Buying this on any of those heroes is throwing gold away. They already do what this item does, and better.

The upgrade path also matters. Specialist's Array builds into Hydra's Breath, which is one of the strongest late-game ranged carry items in 7.41—more agility, more strength, more damage, extended attack range, and a poison passive that deals percentage max HP damage per second. If that is your target—and on the right hero it absolutely should be—buying Specialist's Array first is mandatory, not optional.

Tips & common mistakes

  • The extra projectiles do NOT trigger on-hit effects. Orb of Frost slow, Maelstrom chain lightning, Daedalus crit—none of it fires from the Splitshot projectiles. They are pure physical damage only. Do not build this expecting it to amplify your orbs or procs.
  • The cone angle means positioning matters. You need to be facing the targets for the projectiles to reach them. When farming stacked camps or clearing a wave, angle yourself so the cone covers as many units as possible. Attacking sideways or while running loses you procs constantly.
  • The primary attack also gets a small damage bonus when Splitshot procs—not just the secondaries. At high attack speed this adds up quietly across a full fight. It is not why you buy the item, but it is real value on top of everything else.
  • This is a farming and mid-game power item. Do not buy it late when you already have a full build and think Splitshot will swing teamfights. It will not, not at that stage. Buy it early, use it to hit your timings, and upgrade into Hydra's Breath when the game calls for more.

Summary

Specialist's Array moved from the neutral pool to the shop because ranged carries needed a buyable farm solution, and this one is exactly that. Wave clear, attack damage, agility, and a direct upgrade path into one of the best late-game ranged carry items in the current patch. Buy it early on ranged carries without innate AoE, use it to close the gap on your item timings, and upgrade it when the game demands more.

Just do not put it on Medusa. I am begging you.
