Why Buy Power Treads?

Power Treads are the boots choice that refuse to do one thing. Phase Boots give you burst movement and armor. Arcane Boots give you mana. Tranquil Boots gives you regen. Treads give you attack speed, a primary attribute bonus of your choice, and movement speed—and then let you change that attribute bonus on demand with no cooldown, which is the mechanic that separates a player who bought Treads from a player who actually uses Treads.

The switch attribute is the entire point. On a strength hero, switching to intelligence before you cast spells means your mana pool is larger and your spells cost a smaller percentage of your mana. Immediately after casting, switch back to strength for more HP and damage. On an agility carry, switch to strength when you are taking burst damage to soften the percentage hit to your HP pool, then switch back to agility for the attack speed and armor when you are fighting. It is not complicated. It takes one click. And at average MMR, almost nobody does it.

When to Buy Power Treads?

The first boots item on the majority of right-click carries and strength cores are Juggernaut, Slark, Phantom Assassin, Wraith King, Chaos Knight, and Troll Warlord. The 25 attack speed plus primary attribute plus movement speed is the most complete stat package of any boot at 1400 gold.

The alternative is Phase Boots for heroes who need the burst movement to chase or lane aggressively, or Arcane Boots on supports and casters who are mana-starved before they can afford better options. If neither of those problems is urgent, Treads is the default.

Tips & common mistakes

  • · Switch to INTELLIGENCE before using spells or consuming a mana item. The game recalculates your mana pool percentage-wise, not the raw number—meaning if you switch to intelligence when you are at 50% mana, your 50% is now 50% of a larger pool. More effective mana for free, every single cast. This is called "tread switching," and it is one of the highest-value zero-cost habits in Dota 2.
  • · Switch to STRENGTH before taking a big burst of damage. Same logic in reverse — 50% HP on a larger pool means more effective HP when the nuke lands. Switch back immediately after. One click, a meaningful difference.
  • · Illusions copy the current toggle state the moment they spawn. If you are creating Manta illusions on an agility carry, make sure Treads are on agility before you press Manta—the illusions inherit whatever attribute is active at the moment of creation.
  • · Switch attribute interrupts channeling. Do not toggle while TPing. It is the same trap as Lotus Orb and Mekansm, and it will cancel your teleport mid-cast.
  • · Treads can be disassembled. The Boots of Speed feeds into almost every other boot upgrade—Arcane, Phase, and Travels. If the game goes late and you want Boots of Travel, disassemble Treads first and use the components rather than buying a second Boots of Speed from scratch.

Summary

Power Treads are the boots choice that rewards you for actually using the toggle. Buy them on right-click carries and strength cores, switch to intelligence before every spell cast and strength before every burst rotation, and treat Switch Attribute as an active part of your gameplay rather than a set-and-forget stat. The players who do this consistently are getting hundreds of free effective HP and mana over a full game. It costs nothing.
