Troll Warlord

It's an easy thing to offend a troll. A prickly and contentious race, trolls thrive on argument and strife, missing no excuse to raise their voices in dispute. Males grow to maturity in subterranean chambers beneath their matriarch's domicile, feeding and amusing themselves while contributing nothing. Often they stay for years beyond the age of maturity, while the matriarch provides them with sustenance. When young trolls are finally pushed from their sub-chamber, they gather with others of their kind, forming roving gangs of malcontents who complain loudly about all manner of vexation.

As much as trolls love to argue, imagine how rare it is for a troll to be driven from his own kind for being too difficult to get along with. Such was Jah'rakal's fate, a monger troll from deep in the Hoven. So deluded was he, so bitter and abrasive, that even other trolls found his company intolerable. After one particularly vitriolic outburst in which he claimed the lion's share of loot from their latest raid, his cohorts finally snapped. They turned on him, beat him with clubs, and drove him from the encampment. Enraged at his banishment, he returned the next day, armed with steel, and slew them all, one by one. He then swore a blood oath: he would ever after be a fighting force unto himself. Now he roams the world as the Troll Warlord, bitter and angry, the Imperial high commander of an army of one.

When to Pick Troll Warlord?

Very situational. And I want to be precise about what that means for Troll specifically — because "situational" for some heroes means "pick them into the right lineup." For Troll Warlord, "situational" means "pick him when the enemy made a specific mistake in their draft or when you specifically need to hard-counter one hero in their lineup." When that situation exists, Troll is genuinely devastating. When it does not exist—when the enemy drafts illusion heroes, when they have Silver Edge carriers, when they have reliable kiting tools—Troll Warlord is one of the most punishable carries in the game.

Berserker's Rage is now his innate—no longer occupying an ability slot—which means switching between ranged and melee form is a permanent background mechanic that scales with hero level, granting progressively better movement speed, armor, and root chance on melee attacks passively as the game goes on. The freed ability slot changes the skill progression meaningfully and gives Fervor more levels earlier. Fervor is the ability that defines Troll's entire identity—every consecutive hit on the same target stacks increasing attack speed, up to a maximum of ten stacks. At max stacks with max Fervor, Troll Warlord is attacking at a speed that most heroes in the game simply cannot match in sustained single-target right-clicks. Combined with Battle Trance—which forces Troll to attack the nearest enemy within 900 range, grants massive bonus lifesteal, attack speed, and movement speed, and prevents damage from killing him for the duration—a Troll Warlord with ten Fervor stacks active and Battle Trance running is one of the single most terrifying right-clickers in the game at his power window. And the level 20 talent now grants allied heroes Troll's Battle Trance attack speed as well—turning a solo, unkillable Troll rampage into a team-wide attack speed steroid that can win teamfights for every hero simultaneously.

But the illusion problem is real, and it is not going away. Escorenews confirmed Troll among the negatively shifted heroes in the current patch period, and the current meta's dominant carry heroes—Terrorblade at 56.8% winrate with Reflection on every nearby hero and Phantom Lancer with a hundred illusions walking around—are exactly the nightmares that destroy Troll's game plan entirely. Fervor stacks reset the moment Troll switches targets. In a fight against a Phantom Lancer who has thirty illusions, Troll is constantly resetting his attack speed to zero as he attacks different illusions looking for the real one. Battle Trance forces him to attack the nearest unit, which, against an illusion army, is never the hero he wants to kill. The current meta's physical damage powerhouses—the meta that Troll theoretically belongs in—are specifically the illusion carriers whose kit is his hardest counter. Pick him when the enemy carry is Phantom Assassin—Whirling Axes melee applies a 60% miss chance, and Troll has True Strike from his right-clicks, making Phantom Assassin's entire Blur evasion irrelevant simultaneously. Pick him when the enemy has drafted zero illusion heroes and has no Silver Edge carrier; the mid-game timing is around fifteen to twenty minutes, and the enemy team cannot reliably kite him once Battle Trance fires. Avoid him and heroes like Terrorblade, Phantom Lancer, Naga Siren, Chaos Knight, and any hero who builds Silver Edge to break Fervor.

Tips & common mistakes

 • Fervor stacks reset to zero when Troll switches targets—most pub Troll players frantically switch between enemies during fights trying to kill everything at once, resetting Fervor on every switch and operating at zero stacks permanently. The correct use is picking the single highest-priority target in a fight and committing every attack to that target until they are dead, letting Fervor compound to maximum stacks, then switching ONCE to the next priority target. The order in which you choose targets determines whether Fervor is working for you or against you in every teamfight.
 • Battle Trance forces Troll to attack the nearest enemy unit within 900 range, prioritizing heroes—most pub Troll players activate Battle Trance at the start of a fight with multiple enemies nearby, get pulled onto a support in the wrong position, and waste the duration attacking the wrong target. The correct use is activating Battle Trance when the highest-priority enemy is the nearest hero within 900 range—position Troll NEXT TO the carry you want to kill before pressing the button so Battle Trance locks onto that carry automatically.
 • Whirling Axes melee applies a 60% miss chance to all enemies in the small AoE — most pub Troll players use it exclusively in melee form during fights and never consider its defensive applications. Against a high-damage right-click carry who is attacking Troll during Battle Trance, Whirling Axes melee applies a 60% miss chance to that carry simultaneously, dramatically reducing the damage. The troll receives while his own attacks benefit from Battle Trance's lifesteal. Use it defensively ON the hero attacking Troll, not just offensively for damage.
 • Aghanim's Shard adds a proc chance per Fervor stack to fire a bonus ranged attack at a nearby secondary target—at max stacks the proc chance reaches 84%. Most pub troll players treat Shard as a low-priority upgrade and delay it for late-game. In the current meta with grouped team fights, a max-Fervor Troll with Shard is simultaneously attacking his primary target AND firing bonus ranged attacks hitting secondary targets at an 84% proc rate—this is meaningful AOE physical damage output that turns Troll from a single-target right-clicker into a genuine team fight presence. Build it earlier than most players do.
 • Silver Edge breaks Fervor — most pub Troll players never consider this and assume their Fervor stacks are always active. Any hero with Silver Edge who strikes Troll immediately removes all Fervor stacks and prevents new stacks from forming for the Break duration. Against teams with Silver Edge carriers—Clinkz, Riki, or any core who bought it specifically for Troll—the counter to this is activating Battle Trance the moment Break is applied, as the attack speed from Battle Trance does not depend on Fervor stacks and provides a temporary base attack speed boost even while broken.
 • Battle Trance applies a basic dispel on cast — most pub Troll players never use Battle Trance as a dispel tool and save it exclusively for offensive damage windows. Against heroes who apply strong debuffs that would otherwise neutralize Troll's Lion hex, Shadow Shaman's Shackles, or Bloodseeker's Rupture, casting Battle Trance immediately upon the debuff landing both dispels it AND makes Troll unkillable for the duration simultaneously. The basic dispel removes most non-ultimate disables on cast, turning would-be kill setups into a free Battle Trance window.

Summary

Very situational — and the current meta makes the situational part especially important to understand because the best carries right now include Terrorblade and Phantom Lancer, who are specifically Troll's worst matchups. Escorenews flagged him as negatively shifted in the current patch cycle; the illusion meta punishes his Fervor reset mechanic relentlessly, and Silver Edge breaks the passive that makes him dangerous.

Pick him into Phantom Assassin and watch the Blur evasion mean absolutely nothing against a 60% miss chance plus True Strike. Pick him into a draft with zero illusion heroes and no Silver Edge carrier, activate Battle Trance with ten Fervor stacks on the carry you want dead, and that carry has roughly three seconds to live. He is a weapon with a very specific target. Make sure that target is in the enemy draft before you pick him.
