Why Buy Guardian Greaves?
Guardian Greaves is what you buy when your team needs a walking fountain on legs. It combines everything Arcane Boots and Mekansm do individually—movement speed, mana on demand, an armor aura, and health regen—into one item slot, which on a support who is already fighting for inventory space is an enormous deal. Two items into one slot means a free slot for something else. In a position 5 support, that free slot is the difference between carrying a Glimmer Cape or an Aghanim's Shard and carrying nothing.
The active one—Mend—is the reason you build this over keeping Mekansm. It restores a meaningful chunk of health and mana to every nearby ally simultaneously, and it applies a basic dispel on the caster when it fires. That last part is what elevates it. You are not just healing your team—you are also removing most debuffs from yourself in the same button press. Silenced? Men d. Slowed? Men d. Caught by a hex that is about to expire? Mend the moment it breaks and walk away clean. The heal and the self-dispel in one cast make this the most multi-functional single button press any support has access to.
The passive Guardian Aura also gives permanent armor and health regen to every ally nearby—and when the wielder drops below a health threshold, the wielder's own regeneration spikes significantly. That boosted regen at low HP has saved more games than people realize. Supports who should be dead are suddenly regenerating through damage in the brief window before the next hit lands.
When to Buy Guardian Greaves?
Positions 4 and 5 support those who are already building Arcane Boots and Mekansm as natural laning items and want to consolidate them for inventory efficiency. That is the core use case, and it is simple—if you already have both components, finishing Guardian Greaves is almost always correct.
The draft signal is a fight-heavy, teamfight-oriented game where your team needs sustained healing across multiple engagements rather than just one burst. Greaves cooldown is long enough that it is not a per-fight item—it is a per-major-engagement item. In games with constant skirmishes where your team is fighting every two minutes, the mana restore component is often more valuable than the heal because it keeps everyone's spells cycling.
The self-dispel matters most against lineups with persistent debuffs—Skywrath Mage's Concussive Shot, Ancient Apparition's Ice Vortex, and Disruptor's Glimpse. Being able to instantly remove those from yourself without a separate Lotus Orb or Eul's is genuine value that a lot of players forget is in the items.
Skip it when your team does not fight as a unit and you are playing a spread, split-push game. Mend's radius is generous, but your team needs to be in the same area for it to matter. Also skip it when your hero needs different boots—if the game demands Phase Boots or Power Treads on a utility offlaner, the Arcane Boots component path does not fit.
Tips & common mistakes
- Mend applies the basic dispel on the caster only—not on your allies. Your teammates do not get debuffs removed when you press it. Only you do. If your carry is silenced, Greaves does not fix that. You are the one who gets clean.
- Mend and Mekansm Restore share a restriction window. If a teammate was recently healed by a Mekansm on another hero, your Mend does not heal them again until the restriction expires. In games where multiple supports are building healing items, the second heal is wasted on anyone who was already caught by the first one. Communicate so you are not overlapping.
- Mend interrupts your channeling abilities when you cast it. If you are channeling Rearm as Tinker or any other channeled spell, pressing Greaves cancels it. Do not panic-mend during a channel.
- The boosted passive regen on the wielder at low health is significant. Do not always assume you are dead when you drop low. The regen spike buys you seconds that your team can use to peel for you, especially if you are behind a creep wave or have any other sustain stacking on top of it.
- Multiple Guardian Auras do not stack. If two supports on your team both have Guardian Greaves, the armor and regen aura only counts once. The Mend active from both still works independently on cooldown, but the passive value is entirely wasted on the second one. In coordinated play, only one support should be building this.
Summary
Guardian Greaves is the best single-item investment a teamfight support can make once the components are in place. One slot replaces two, a meaningful team-wide heal with a self-dispel is available on a reasonable cooldown, and a permanent armor and regen aura keeps everyone slightly healthier all game long.
Buy it when you already have the components and your team fights together. Use Mend to sustain between engagements, not just as a panic button in the middle of one. And remember—the spell on yourself is half the reason the item exists. Use it.
