Strategy

Why pick up Spider Legs?

Spider Legs is the neutral you take when you'd rather be everywhere than be bigger. It gives no stats at all—no damage, no survivability, nothing on the sheet. What it gives instead is near-permanent mobility: a strong movement speed boost, a big turn-rate improvement, and free pathing that lets you walk through units, cliffs, and trees, cutting down anything you run into. And because it comes back quickly relative to how long it lasts, you're moving like that for most of the game.

What makes Spider Legs different from most neutrals is that its power is entirely positional. It doesn't win you a straight fight—it wins you the setup to one. Getting to the target first, catching the runaway, cutting across terrain nobody expects, peeling out through a creep wave that should have body-blocked you. The turn rate is the quietly underrated half: heroes who feel sluggish to steer suddenly kite, orb-walk, and reposition like completely different heroes.

Because it trades raw power for pure movement, Spider Legs is a real opportunity cost at the tier it drops. You're passing up a neutral that makes you stronger in exchange for one that makes you faster and impossible to pin down—a trade that only pays off on heroes whose value comes from where they are, not how hard they hit.

When to grab Spider Legs?

Spider Legs belongs on heroes whose impact is about position and tempo—getting the jump, landing the combo, and being in every fight on the map. Two profiles stand out:

Gankers and initiators who need to reach a target: heroes who win by getting on top of someone and committing, then chasing the kill (Tiny, Tusk, Doom, Shadow Shaman). Getting there first and following up is the whole job.

Casters and skirmishers who live and die by positioning: heroes who need to hold the perfect angle to land a spell, then slide out before they're punished (Shadow Fiend, Jakiro, Snapfire, and Silencer). The mobility turns "I got caught out of position" into "I was never there."

The composition signal is heroes cursed with bad turn rates or no mobility of their own. If your hero feels heavy and slow to steer or has no dash or blink to work with, Spider Legs is transformative in a way it simply isn't on a naturally slippery hero who already has all the movement they need.

The situation's signal is a map you want to control. Spider Legs is best when the game is about tempo—constant rotations, ganks, and picking targets across the map. It's worth less in a game that comes down to standing on high ground trading raw stats, where a power neutral would do more.

Tips & common mistakes

  • Value the turn rate as much as the speed. On a heavy, slow-turning hero, it's a massive upgrade to kiting, orb-walking, and repositioning—sometimes worth more than the movement speed itself.
  • Use free pathing to take lines nobody expects. Cutting through trees, over cliffs, and straight through creep waves lets you gank from angles and escape through terrain a normal hero can't—that surprise is where a lot of the value hides.
  • Don't take it on a hero that's already mobile. A hero with their own blink or dash doesn't need this nearly as much—spend the high-tier slot on power and give the mobility to someone who actually lacks it.
  • Remember it's pure utility. It adds nothing to your stats, so if what your hero really needs is damage or survivability, a stat-heavy neutral is the better hold. Spider Legs only pays off when position is your win condition.
  • Cutting trees works both ways. You can open a new path for yourself, but you also destroy the tree cover you might have wanted to hide behind—be deliberate about what you're removing.
  • Don't cast it mid-channel. It interrupts your own channelling abilities on use, so don't press it in the middle of a channelled spell or a teleport.

Summary

Spider Legs is a mobility engine with nothing on the stat sheet—near-constant movement speed; a big turn-rate boost; and free pathing that lets you cut through units, cliffs, and trees for most of the game. Its value is entirely positional, so it belongs to the gankers, initiators, and skirmishers who win by being in the right place first, and especially to heavy, slow-turning heroes with no mobility of their own.

Take it when your win condition is tempo and map control, skip it when you'd rather have raw power, and treat it as the item that turns "out of position" into "already gone".
