Omniknight

Purist Thunderwrath was a hard-fighting, road-worn, deeply committed knight, sworn to the order in which he had grown up as squire to elder knights of great reputation. He had spent his entire life in the service of the Omniscience, the All Seeing One. Theirs was a holy struggle, and so embedded was he in his duty that he never questioned it so long as he had the strength to fight and the impetuous valor that comes with youth. But over the long years of the crusade, as his elders passed away and were buried in sorry graves at the side of muddy tracks, as his bond-brothers fell in battle to uncouth creatures that refused to bow to the Omniscience, as his own squires were chewed away by ambush and plague and bad water, he began to question the meaning of his vows--the meaning of the whole crusade. <br><br>After deep meditation, he parted ways with his army and commenced a long trek back to the cave-riddled cliffs of Emauracus, and there he set a challenge to the priests of the Omniscience. No knight had ever questioned them before, and they tried to throw him into the pit of sacrifice, but Purist would not be moved. For as he faced them down, he began to glow with a holy light, and they saw that the Omniscience had chosen to reveal Itself to him. The Elder Hierophant led him on a journey of weeks down into the deepest chamber, the holy of holies, where waited not some abstract concept of wisdom and insight, not some carved relic requiring an injection of imagination to believe in, but the old one itself. It had not merely dwelt in those rocks for billions of aeons; no, It had created them. <br><br>The Omniscience had formed the immense mineral shell of the planet around itself, as a defense against the numerous terrors of space. Thus the All Seeing One claimed to have created the world, and given the other truths revealed to Purist on that day, the knight had no reason to refute the story. Perhaps the Omniscience is a liar, deep in its prison of stone, and not the world's creator at all, but Omniknight never again questioned his faith. His campaign had meaning at last. And there can be no question that the glorious powers that imbue him, and give his companions such strength in battle, are real beyond any doubt.

When to Pick Omniknight?

Omniknight as a core is one of those picks that makes the enemy team go "Wait, what?" in the draft—and then spend the next forty minutes being extremely annoyed.

The situational framing is absolutely correct because the conditions that make him genuinely oppressive are very specific—you want a meta full of physical damage carries, you want a draft that can protect him long enough to get items, and you want the enemy team to have zero reliable magic damage that bypasses Guardian Angel entirely. Check the first box immediately—the current meta is FULL of physical damage cores.

Lifestealer, Night Stalker, Ursa, Juggernaut, Monkey King — every single one of them deals primarily right-click physical damage that Guardian Angel makes completely irrelevant for its entire duration. Omniknight in a physical damage meta is like someone invented a cheat code that the enemy carry bought ten thousand gold of items to counter and then discovered the cheat code still works anyway.

As a core—whether carry or offlane—he gets Purification scaling with his strength; Heavenly Grace providing spell immunity and a massive strength bonus to himself or allies; Degen Aura now following him permanently as an aura rather than a toggled cast, which means any physical damage carry within his movement range is permanently slowed and has reduced armor; and Guardian Angel giving the entire team physical immunity for several seconds.

As an offlaner, he specifically uses Purification's pure damage to harass the enemy carry in the laning phase while simultaneously healing himself—the ability does both things in one cast, and the enemy carry literally cannot trade back effectively because they are taking pure damage while Omniknight heals for the full amount simultaneously.

He is disgusting, specifically into right-click-heavy lineups without reliable magic damage—Lifestealer, Phantom Assassin, and Drow Ranger—carries that deal almost exclusively physical damage and become completely irrelevant during Guardian Angel while Omniknight's team freely right-clicks everyone during the immunity window.

He pairs beautifully with magic damage dealers that cover his weakness—Leshrac, Zeus, and Skywrath Mage—because the enemy team gets stuck between Guardian Angel blocking their physical damage and these heroes pouring magic damage in simultaneously while Guardian Angel is active.

Avoid him completely in heavy magic damage lineups that do not care about Guardian Angel at all—Leshrac, Invoker, Queen of Pain—because an Omniknight whose ultimate provides zero protection against 80% of the enemy team's damage output is just a slow melee hero with a heal and a slow walk toward things that kill him in two seconds.

Also genuinely terrible for Diffusal Blade and Nullifier users specifically—both items dispel Guardian Angel and Heavenly Grace, which are his two most important cooldowns, and an enemy team that buys one Diffusal Blade per core has essentially removed Omniknight's entire identity from the game.

Tips & common mistakes

  • Purification deals pure damage to enemies AND heals the target simultaneously, which means the correct use in the laning phase is casting it on YOURSELF when the enemy carry is adjacent to you, not on your ally at range. Walk into the enemy carry's face, pop Purification on yourself, take the pure damage hit on them while healing yourself fully, and walk away. Most Omniknight players use Purification reactively to heal allies from range and never use it offensively as a pure damage nuke. Both applications are correct — learn when to use which.
  • Degen Aura now follows Omniknight permanently as an aura rather than requiring toggle management—which means any enemy within the aura radius is ALWAYS being slowed and having armor reduced. This changes how you should position yourself in fights dramatically. Stay close to the enemy carries at all times rather than standing at the back with your supports—your aura is only active within its radius, and an Omniknight who is standing next to his own supports instead of the enemy team is wasting one of his most impactful passive tools completely.
  • Guardian Angel provides physical immunity to ALL nearby allies but does NOT protect against magic or pure damage—this is the single most important thing to understand about the ability and the single most common mistake at average MMR. Most Omniknight players activate Guardian Angel the moment an initiation lands, but if the enemy team deals primarily magic damage, the ability is completely useless. Only use Guardian Angel when the enemy team is actively right-clicking your heroes to death, not when Leshrac's Pulse Nova is the primary damage source.
  • Heavenly Grace's dispel strength scales with the number of debuffs on the target—the more debuffs the target has, the more strength bonus Heavenly Grace provides. This means the correct cast target for Heavenly Grace in a teamfight is NOT the hero you most want to protect from disables—it is the hero who currently has the MOST debuffs on them, because they receive the maximum strength and HP regeneration bonus. Track debuff stacks during fights and prioritize accordingly.
  • As a core Omniknight, Strength items are your primary damage AND tankiness items simultaneously because Purification's pure damage scales directly with Strength. Every point of strength you buy is increasing your HP pool, your purification nuke damage, and the amount purification heals simultaneously. Crimson Guard, Pipe of Insight, and Halberd are not just defensive purchases — they are aggressive purchases that make Purification hit significantly harder.
  • Nullifier and Diffusal Blade completely dispel Guardian Angel on hit — and most average-MMR players do not warn their team when the enemy has bought these items. The moment you see a Nullifier or Diffusal Blade appear in the enemy inventory, communicate this to your team and never activate Guardian Angel preemptively when those heroes have their items ready. Save Guardian Angel for the moment AFTER those dispels have been used on other targets.
  • Do not try to play Omniknight carry in a magic damage meta. This is worth repeating directly—if the enemy team has Leshrac, Invoker, Zeus, or any combination of high-magic-damage heroes as their primary damage dealers, Omniknight as a core is throwing the draft. Check the enemy's damage types before locking in, and if more than one major damage source is magical, pick a different hero.

Summary

Omniknight is situational but genuinely good right now in the current meta of physical damage core dominance—a meta with Lifestealer as the most banned hero, Night Stalker at a 55%+ winrate, and physical right-click carries absolutely everywhere is a meta where Guardian Angel is one of the most impactful ultimates available in the entire game; Degen Aura permanently following him amplifies every fight where physical carries are trying to trade; and Purification's pure damage scaling with strength makes him a legitimate threatening core rather than just a tanky body.

Pick him into physical damage lineups, build strength items aggressively, keep your aura in the enemies' faces constantly, and save Guardian Angel for exactly the right moment when the enemy carry is about to finish off your carry with three right-clicks and you just make it all completely pointless.

The most satisfying click in Dota 2 is pressing Guardian Angel at exactly the right moment and watching a fully farmed Lifestealer open wound, rage, and right-click your carry for six seconds, producing exactly zero HP reduction. And in the current meta, that satisfaction is available more often than it has been in years.
