Visage

Perched atop the entrance to the Narrow Maze sit the looming shapes of sneering gargoyles, the paths into the hereafter forever in their gaze. Beasts and birds, men and monsters, all creatures that die and choose to travel beyond must someday pass beneath their sight. For an untethered spirit, the decision to journey through the veil of death is irrevocable. When chance comes, and by craft or cunning some restless soul escapes their hells and heavens, it is the dreaded gargoyle Visage, the bound form of the eternal spirit Necro'lic, who is dispatched to reclaim them. Ruthless and efficient, unhindered by the principles of death and fatigue, Visage stalks its prey without mercy or end, willingly destroying all which may give shelter to the fugitive essence. That which flaunts the laws of the afterlife may never rest, for while it is true that the dead may be revived, it is only a matter of time before Visage finds and returns them to their proper place.

When to Pick Visage?

Nobody. Nobody is talking about him. Not a single tier list from the current patch period even mentions his name. After the Great Reset dropped with ninety different hero changes, Terrorblade at 56.8%, Night Stalker dominating headlines, and Ursa hitting the highest carry win rate in the game, Visage quietly went from an already low-priority pick to a hero that the community collectively forgot exists. And here is the thing, guys. He is not bad. He was never bad when played in the right hands—historical Dotabuff data shows a near 60% Immortal bracket win rate when specialists pick him, and the D2PT 7.41 data shows a 59.5% win rate across the matches that exist. The sample sizes are small because almost nobody is playing him, but the people who ARE playing him are winning at an obscene rate.

Gravekeeper's Cloak is now his innate—and this matters enormously for the pos 4 identity. Previously, Gravekeeper's Cloak required an ability slot and a level investment. Now it scales passively with Visage's innate level, providing layered damage reduction protection on both Visage AND his familiars within a 900 range simultaneously, for free. Up to five layers at max level, each providing incoming damage reduction that stacks to up to 80% total reduction at full stacks. What this means as pos 4 is that Visage arrives in the safe lane already protected by a substantial damage barrier that the enemy support has to chew through before they can threaten him meaningfully, with zero ability slot cost. The enemy support attacks Visage to zone him, depletes layers, and then Visage simply waits for the layers to restore while the enemy wastes time hitting a hero who absorbs most of the damage. Meanwhile, the Familiars with 900-range Gravekeeper's Cloak protection from Visage are also substantially more durable than the enemy expects, allowing them to contest the lane without dying to incidental AoE harassment.

Grave Chill at level 2 is the kill setup. You cast it on the enemy carry—the target gets slowed in movement and attack speed simultaneously, Visage and the Familiars receive the inverse bonus (movement speed and attack speed boost), AND the Familiars automatically receive an attack order on the debuffed enemy. Your carry chases a slow target while Familiars with boosted attack speed stack their charges on it. That is a level 2 kill setup from a position 4 with zero items. Soul Assumption charges from every damage instance nearby heroes take over 100—and in a lane with active Familiar harassment, Familiars constantly whittling the enemy, and Grave Chill trading damage, the Soul Assumption charges accumulate so quickly that by level six the nuke is fully stacked and ready for a devastating single cast. The level 15 talent making Soul Assumption hit three targets turns it into triple-target burst damage that charges off every damage instance in the fight—a teamfight with multiple heroes all taking hits simultaneously stacks. Soul Assumption to maximum charges in seconds, and then a single cast nukes three heroes simultaneously. He is great at lineups with squishy supports in the safe lane who cannot absorb Familiar harassment, into physical damage drafts where his Familiar chip damage and Soul Assumption stacking synergize, and into games where the enemy team has no AoE burst that instantly kills Familiars before charges stack. Avoid him in heavy AoE magic burst lineups that kill both Familiars instantly before they contribute—Jakiro, Earthshaker—and in heroes who build Lotus Orb to reflect Soul Assumption back at Visage.

Tips & common mistakes

  • Grave Chill simultaneously slows the enemy AND buffs Visage AND buffs nearby. Familiars—most pub Visage pos 4 players use Grave Chill as a simple slow debuff and let it expire passively. The correct use is Grave Chill immediately triggering the Familiars' automatic attack order on the debuffed target, using the Familiar attack speed bonus from the buff to maximize charge consumption before Stone Form, and using Visage's own movement speed bonus to reposition aggressively during the slow window. All three beneficiaries of Grave Chill need to be active simultaneously—if your Familiars are not within attack range of the Grave Chilled target when you cast it, you wasted the Familiar attack order trigger entirely.
  • Gravekeeper's Cloak layers restore over time and require damage instances above 40 to remove—most pub Visage players never think about layer management and simply take whatever damage comes. Against a ranged support who last-hits at 50 damage per attack, every attack they land on Visage removes a layer. Against a support with 80-90 base damage, each hit removes a layer faster than it restores. The correct response is backing off briefly after losing two or three layers to let them restore, then re-engaging with full stacks, rather than standing in the lane for sustained trading that depletes all five layers and leaves Visage with zero protection.
  • Soul Assumption charges off every damage instance nearby heroes take over 100—most pub Visage players only think about charging Soul Assumption from Familiar attacks on the enemy carry. Every fight that involves multiple heroes all taking damage simultaneously charges Soul Assumption at maximum speed. A team fight where four heroes are all taking hits stacks Soul Assumption to maximum charges in seconds. Cast it immediately when fully charged during extended fights—holding Soul Assumption waiting for the perfect kill moment wastes charge stacks that continue building past the cap.
  • Stone Form drops the Familiar from the sky onto a target and stuns the area—most pub Visage players manually micro each Familiar to cast Stone Form individually during fights, causing delays between stuns. The Stone Form sub-ability on Visage's hotkey orders the NEAREST Familiar to immediately Stone Form its current location. Alt-casting Stone Form sends the nearest Familiar to a targeted area first. In a teamfight initiation, hitting Stone Form twice in quick succession from two different Familiar positions creates two independent AOE stuns that land in quick sequence—the correct fight opener is positioning both Familiars near grouped enemies before the fight starts, then firing both Stone Forms within two seconds of each other for cascading stun coverage.
  • Aghanim's Shard gives Gravekeeper's Cloak an active component granting Visage Stone Form properties—most pub Visage players skip Shard entirely as a pos 4 support who cannot afford it. The correct timing is Aghanim's Shard before Scepter, around 18-22 minutes, because the active gives Visage personal invulnerability and rapid health regeneration on demand—turning Visage from a fragile support into a hero who can absorb an entire burst combo by activating personal Stone Form, heal back a massive percentage of maximum HP, and then re-engage with full Gravekeeper's Cloak layers. This is arguably Visage's best defensive item per gold spent as pos 4.

Summary

Forgotten, yes. Bad, no. Pfiu... The D2PT data shows specialists winning at nearly 60% in the current patch with hero builds that exist across only a few hundred matches—meaning the people who know this hero are winning, and the community just has not noticed yet because everyone is too busy arguing about Ursa and Night Stalker. Gravekeeper's Cloak being innate makes him durable enough to lane as pos 4 without the frailty that historically forced him into the mid lane.

Grave Chill creates two-man kill setups at level two. Soul Assumption with the level 15 triple target talent nukes three heroes off single cast charges. And two Stone Form Familiars stun-locking an enemy carry while Grave Chill prevents escape is genuinely one of the most oppressive physical damage setups a pos 4 can deliver in the current aggressive laning meta. He is a specialist pick, no question. But if you put in the time, the win rate data says the reward is there.
