Nyx Assassin

Deep in the Archive of Ultimyr, shelved between scholarly treatises on dragon cladistics and books of untranslatable spells, there is an ancient tome of entomological curiosities. Compiled by scholars, the book describes the telepathic talents of the zealot scarab, a strange species of social insect with abilities unique to all the seven planes.

Unlike most grubs of his colony, Nyx Assassin did not arise from metamorphosis with the plodding thoughts and blunted appendages common to the worker caste of his kind. For his was a special transformation, guided by the grace of Nyx. He was the chosen one, selected from the many and anointed with an extract of the queen goddess herself. Not all survive the dark blessing of the queen's chamber, but he emerged with a penetrating mind, and dagger-like claws--his razor sharp mandibles raking the air while his thoughts projected directly into the minds of those around him. Of all zealot scarabs, he alone was selected for the highest calling. After his metamorphosis, he was reborn, by grace of Nyx, with abilities which shaped him for one thing and one thing only: to kill in the name of his goddess.

When to Pick Nyx Assassin?

People sleep on Nyx right now, and that is a mistake. He is sitting at a 52.8% win rate in the current patch with nearly 6000 matches tracked—placing him in the top twenty heroes across all roles in the D2PT meta standings. The current patch removed his old Nyxth Sense innate and replaced it with a Mana Burn innate that burns 12% of ALL damage dealt as mana burn—his attacks, his spells, and even the reflected damage from Spiked Carapace all apply this burn simultaneously.

In a meta where intelligence-heavy mid heroes dominate—Leshrac, Invoker, Queen of Pain—Nyx Assassin, hovering around them permanently draining their mana pool through every single interaction, is quietly one of the most punishing supports to face.

He is disgusting, specifically into lineups that are mana-dependent across multiple heroes, because a Vendetta backstab into Impale into Mind Flare into Mana Burn applied to any intelligence mid at level six removes both a massive chunk of health AND burns enough mana to push them completely off their next ability rotation.

He thrives in the current laning patch meta precisely because the pos 4 job is to impact the game early, and Nyx can get level six faster than almost any soft support by being a competent solo offlaner or roamer—and a level six Nyx with Vendetta available is one of the most terrifying rotators in the game at that timing.

He pairs beautifully with heroes that have strong follow-up physical damage that converts Impale stuns into dead bodies quickly—Lifestealer, Juggernaut, and Night Stalker—that carry out the close distance and dump right-click damage the moment Nyx locks someone down with a max range Impale from the fog.

Avoid picking him into lineups with reliable detection that completely shuts Vendetta down—Slardar, Bounty Hunter, or a team with proactive gem purchases—because a Nyx who cannot use Vendetta safely is just a melee support with a stun, a reflect, and a nuke who dies to every carry that looks at him sideways. Also terrible for Ursa—Fury Swipes through Spiked Carapace means Nyx reflects one stack back and then takes the other four to the face at increasing damage.

Tips & common mistakes

 • The new Mana Burn innate applies through EVERY damage source, including Spiked Carapace reflects—which means when the enemy Leshrac fires Diabolic Edict on you and you activate Spiked Carapace, the reflected damage burns 12% of that back as mana in addition to the physical reflect. This stacks with Mind Flare's mana-based damage, creating a combination that drains intelligence heroes faster than they can bottle refill or clarity themselves. Target the highest-mana hero in every fight for maximum innate value.
 • Vendetta breaks the moment Nyx attacks, not when the attack animation begins—this means the Vendetta backstab attack has zero fade time and the detection window the enemy has is functionally zero unless they have an active gem or true sight. Most players panic when they see detection and try to cancel the attack. Wrong. If you are already within attack range and swinging, commit to the hit—the pure damage lands and then Vendetta breaks, not before.
 • Spiked Carapace can be activated DURING active Vendetta without breaking invisibility—this is one of the most powerful defensive mechanics on the hero, and almost no one at average MMR uses it correctly. If you are approaching under Vendetta and you see an AoE spell incoming—Leshrac Pulse Nova, Jakiro Ice Path—activate Spiked Carapace before the damage hits. You reflect the spell back, stun the caster, and still have your full Vendetta backstab damage available for the following attack. Timing this correctly turns what should be a punishment into a kill.
 • Impale is a ground-targeted stun that travels at a fixed speed in a line—it does NOT home onto heroes directly. You must aim slightly ahead of moving targets rather than clicking directly on their current position. Most missed impales at average MMR are not about range—they are about leading the target incorrectly. A target running directly away from Nyx requires casting Impale through the ground they are standing on, not at them.
 • Burrow from Aghanim's Scepter turns Nyx into a stationary invisible ambush platform with 40% damage reduction and 1.5% health and mana regen per second—most Nyx players treat it as a luxury item, but in the current meta it is a legitimate power purchase because burrowed Nyx casting Impale without facing the target catches enemies completely off guard from positions they assumed were empty. Place yourself in high-traffic areas like rune spots or jungle entrances and wait.
 • As a soft support, Nyx does not need many items to contribute—Force Staff gives him the repositioning to escape after Vendetta breaks in dangerous positions, Aether Lens extends his already impressive Impale range to an absolutely absurd distance, and Blink Dagger gives him the gap closer that makes every rotation a potential kill rather than a near-miss. Do not spend gold on damage items as pos 4—you are not there to right-click; you are there to stun, drain mana, and disappear.
 • Mind Flare deals damage equal to a multiplier of the target's intelligence plus a percentage of damage they received from Nyx in the last 15 seconds—which means the correct combo order is Vendetta backstab FIRST, then Impale, then Mind Flare last. The backstab damage counting toward Mind Flare's bonus multiplier means using Mind Flare after the full combo produces significantly more total damage than using it before or during other abilities.

Summary

Nyx Assassin is genuinely strong right now—52.8% winrate in the top twenty heroes across all roles, a new Mana Burn innate that burns mana through every single damage instance he produces, and a kit that punishes intelligence-heavy mids harder in the current patch than it has in years.

The laning patch meta rewarding early impact plays directly into what a level six Nyx with Vendetta can do from minute seven onward; the Spiked Carapace plus Vendetta interaction remains one of the most technically satisfying defensive mechanics available on any support hero, and the hero genuinely requires almost no items to threaten kills at every stage of the game.

Pick him into mana-heavy lineups, build Aether Lens and Force Staff, hit your Impales from the fog, and make the enemy mid spend the entire early game watching over their shoulder wondering where the bug is coming from next.
