Enigma
Nothing is known of Enigma's background. There are only stories and legends, most of them apocryphal, passed down through the ages. In truth, Enigma is a mystery for whom the only true biography is description: he is a universal force, a consumer of worlds. He is a being of the void, at times corporeal, other times ethereal. A beast between the planes.

There are stories that say he was once a great alchemist who tried to unlock the secrets of the universe and was cursed for his arrogance. Other legends tell that he is an ancient being of strange gravity, the abyss personified--a twisted voice from out the original darkness, before the first light in the universe. And there are older legends that say he is the first collapsed star, a black hole grown complicated and sentient--his motivations unknowable, his power inexorable, a force of destruction unleashed upon existence itself.

When to Pick Enigma?
Here is the thing about Enigma that people have understood since the dawn of Dota 2 — this hero is ALWAYS a problem.
It does not matter what patch we are in, it does not matter what the meta looks like, and it does not matter how many times Valve nerfs Black Hole—a five-man Black Hole is always going to be one of the most game-deciding moments in any match, and right now in patch 7.41a, professional player DM himself ranked Enigma as an S-tier offlaner alongside Bristleback, Doom, Tidehunter, and Batrider.
That is not a small statement—S-tier in a patch that just went through a complete overhaul with facets removed and nine new items added means Enigma came out of the chaos as one of the clearest winners in the entire game. And the reason makes complete sense when you think about it — patch 7.41 gave him a brand new innate ability called Event Horizon, which passively applies a movement speed penalty to every unit moving away from Enigma within a 600 radius at all times.
Do you understand what that means? Even without Black Hole active, just standing near the enemy makes them slower the moment they try to run away. It is a passive gravitational pull that never turns off and makes his Black Hole setups exponentially easier to land because the enemy's escape options are already compromised before the animation even starts.
He is disgusting in lineups that have strong follow-up damage that can pour everything into a five-second Black Hole window—Leshrac, Zeus, Gyrocopter, and Lina—heroes that just need the enemy team standing still for one moment to completely delete everyone.
He thrives in the current meta specifically because the patch has shifted toward grouped teamfight Dota, where teams are pushing together, fighting together, and rotating as a unit—which is exactly the environment where one Black Hole ends the game.
He pairs beautifully with Gyrocopter for obvious reasons—Flak Cannon into a five-man Black Hole is genuinely one of the most disgusting damage combinations in the game right now, and the enemy team cannot do anything except watch their HP bars disappear simultaneously.
The Eidolons also give him one of the best farming speeds of any offlaner in the entire pool — while other position three heroes are struggling to get their items, Enigma is stacking ancient camps and clearing them with Eidolons in a fraction of the time, which means his Blink Dagger timing is always faster than the enemy team expects.
Avoid picking him into lineups that have reliable Black Hole counters—Faceless Void, Puck, and Morphling—heroes that can dodge, displace, or time-stop through the entire duration and make your most important spell completely irrelevant.
Also feels genuinely terrible in heavy silence lineups that shut him down before he gets Black Hole off—Skywrath Mage, Death Prophet, Silencer—because a silenced Enigma standing in the middle of five enemies with no Black Hole available is just a slow strength hero with Eidolons that nobody is afraid of. And if the enemy has a Eul's Scepter or a Refresher on their supports specifically to counter Black Hole?
They are drafting around you specifically, which means you need to be smarter about your timing and positioning rather than just walking in and pressing R every single time.
Tips & common mistakes
- The number one Black Hole mistake in all of Dota 2 is casting it too early before your team is in position to follow up. A five-second Black Hole where your team does zero damage because they were caught off-guard on the other side of the map is five seconds of your most important cooldown achieving absolutely nothing. Communicate, group up, and THEN cast it — not the other way around.
- The new Event Horizon innate ability changes how you should be playing Enigma in the early and mid game. Enemies moving away from you within 600 range are already slowed—use this aggressively in lane to make the enemy offlaner's escapes slightly slower and create kill opportunities with your supports that would not have existed before this patch.
- Eidolons are your most important farming tool, and most Enigma players are terrible at optimizing them. Stack ancient camps at the two- and three-minute mark, clear them at the four- and five-minute mark with your Eidolons, and repeat this cycle all game—a properly stacked and cleared ancient camp gives you an enormous gold advantage that translates directly into a faster Blink Dagger and a faster Refresher Orb.
- Midnight Pulse combined with Black Hole is the combo that most people execute correctly — but the timing matters enormously. Drop Midnight Pulse FIRST, then Black Hole directly on top of it so every hero trapped in the Black Hole is also taking the percentage HP damage from Midnight Pulse simultaneously. The combined damage output is what makes the combo actually kill people instead of just holding them in place while your team scrambles to react.
- Refresher Orb is not a luxury item on Enigma — it is the item that turns a good game into a closed game. One black hole into a teamfight win is great. Two black holes in immediate succession before the enemy can buy back and regroup are a destroyed ancient. Rush it after Blink and watch the enemy team genuinely panic every time they hear the Black Hole sound because they know a second one is immediately coming.
- Black Hole can be canceled by stuns, silences, and even right-clicks if you do not have BKB active. This means BKB is not a luxury item either—it is the spell immunity that lets you actually channel the full five seconds without getting interrupted. If the enemy has reliable single-target stuns that cancel your Black Hole, buy BKB before Refresher and never cast Black Hole without it active first.
- Stop using Eidolons as pure farming units and forget they exist in team fights. Eidolons that multiply can absolutely melt heroes in Black Hole—the more they have multiplied before the teamfight starts, the more damage they deal to every trapped target simultaneously. Send them into the Black Hole alongside your other damage sources and watch the enemy team's HP bars drop twice as fast.
Summary
Enigma is and always will be one of the most terrifying heroes in Dota 2 regardless of the patch, the meta, or how many times Valve tries to make Black Hole slightly less devastating — because a five-man Black Hole followed immediately by a Refresher into a second five-man Black Hole is a game-winning moment that no amount of balance changes can completely remove from the game.
Right now in patch 7.41a he is legitimately S-tier according to pro players; the new Event Horizon innate makes his setups easier than ever before, and the meta of grouped teamfight Dota is playing directly into every single thing he does best.
Farm your Eidolons efficiently, hit your Blink timing faster than the enemy expects, and make sure your team is ALWAYS in position before you press R—because one perfectly timed Black Hole with a Refresher ready in the backpack against a grouped enemy team is not just a good play; it is a free ancient and a game that is effectively already over before the enemy even finishes buying back.
