Riki

Riki was born middle child to the great dynasty of Tahlin. With an older brother groomed for the throne, and a younger brother coddled and kept, Riki, the small middle son, seemed born for the art of invisibility. It was an art he cultivated, and one which ultimately saved his life on the night that his people were betrayed and his family slaughtered. Of all the royal line, he alone escaped, small and agile, unassuming, using smoke as cover. He cut his way out of the royal grounds, using the advantage of surprise, quietly slitting the throats of one enemy warrior after another. Now free of his royal responsibilities, Riki uses his talents in service to a new trade: Stealth Assassin. He silences his enemies, sharpening his skills, hoping to one day take revenge on those who killed his family and robbed him of his birthright.

When to Pick Riki?

Hoohohoho. Guys. Forgotten hero? Let me tell you what Escorenews said about Riki in the current patch. Quote: "Riki is quite successful in average pubs, but in Immortal ranks, he wins 60% of games." 60 percent. At Immortal rank. That is not a forgotten hero. That is a hero that the highest-ranked players in the game have figured out and are absolutely abusing while the rest of the player base sleeps on him.

The reason is the Backstab scaling change in the current patch—the agility multiplier is now 0.55 plus 0.05 per hero level, which means at level 30 Riki's Backstab deals a 2.05 agility multiplier as bonus damage per attack from behind. If Riki builds agility items and reaches 200 agility at max level — not unrealistic with Butterfly, Yasha, and Diffusal — every single backstab hit is dealing over 400 bonus pure damage simultaneously with his base attack.

That is not a support hero. That is a Kerry who happens to be permanently invisible. The level-scaling Backstab is what Immortal players have understood that average MMR players have not—Riki mid gets levels faster than Riki in the safelane or as a roaming four, which means the agility multiplier scaling accelerates faster, which means mid Riki hits his per-level Backstab breakpoints significantly earlier in the game.

By level fifteen, a mid Riki's Backstab is dealing dramatically more per hit than a safelane Riki at the same farm because the hero level multiplier is higher.

He is a nightmare specifically against the current meta's tendency to have fragile intelligence supports who stand still and die to a single burst rotation—a Leshrac or Invoker mid at level fifteen who has been playing with map awareness and buying gem still has to deal with the terrifying combination of Blink Strike instantly repositioning behind them, Smoke Screen silencing and blinding them simultaneously, and a full Backstab burst from the rear before they can react.

Cloak and Dagger also now grants bonus experience on hero kills and assists—which means every successful gank by Riki mid from the fog accelerates his level advantage over the enemy mid, increasing the Backstab multiplier faster, creating a snowball that is exceptionally hard to stop once it starts rolling.

He is disgusting in lineups without reliable detection that cannot maintain gem or sentry ward coverage across the entire map simultaneously—a team that buys one sentry ward and places it in one predictable location is a team that is covering exactly one ramp while Riki ganks every other unprotected position freely.

He thrives as a soft support specifically because the position 4 role in the current meta rewards heroes who can appear from unexpected angles, create kills that the enemy team cannot predict or defend against, and apply pressure across multiple lanes simultaneously—which Riki's permanent invisibility accomplishes more reliably than almost any dedicated roaming hero available.

He pairs beautifully with heroes that have instant lockdown follow-up on Blink Strike's target—Bane's Nightmare immediately after Blink Strike slows a target, Crystal Maiden's Frostbite rooting the silenced hero inside Smoke Screen, or Disruptor's Kinetic Field preventing escape from the Smoke Screen zone—because a target who is inside Smoke Screen, blinded, silenced, AND rooted or slowed is receiving Backstab damage from behind with no ability to turn, respond, or call for help from nearby allies who cannot target Riki through the smoke.

Avoid picking him into lineups with high AOE detection that makes invisibility unreliable across entire fight areas—Slardar's Sprint revealing invisible units in a radius, Bounty Hunter's Track providing global detection on a single target, and Witch Doctor's wards providing vision of nearby invisible heroes—and specifically avoid teams with easy AOE stuns that catch Riki mid-channel during Tricks of the Trade, since the channel can be interrupted by stuns and leaves Riki reappearing in the center of five enemies with no escape if it gets cancelled.

Tips & common mistakes

  • Backstab scales with hero level at 0.55 + 0.05 per level, which means reaching high hero levels as fast as possible is more important for Riki than raw agility itemization early in the game. Mid lane provides the fastest level acceleration available to any hero in Dota 2, which is specifically why Riki mid outperforms Riki safelane at Immortal rank—the higher the hero level, the more bonus pure damage every single Backstab hits deals, and levels are free while agility items cost gold.
  • Blink Strike has two charges with independent restore times — most pub Riki players use both charges immediately on the same target and then have no gap closer or escape available. The correct use is to save one charge as an escape option while using the first charge for initiation. If the gank goes wrong and the target has backup arriving, the second Blink Strike charge behind the arriving support for an unexpected backstab position is both a counter-engagement tool and a repositioning escape in the same cast.
  • Smoke Screen silences AND blinds ALL enemies inside the radius simultaneously—most pub Riki players use Smoke Screen reactively after initiating with Blink Strike, by which point the target is already alerted and moving. The correct order is Smoke Screen FIRST at the target's current position, then Blink Strike behind them while they are already silenced, blinded, and unable to cast spells. The target cannot use a blink escape, cannot cast a save spell, and cannot call for help through the silence before Backstab begins hitting from behind.
  • During Tricks of the Trade channel, Riki becomes invisible and attacks all enemies in the radius from behind automatically—every single auto attack from Tricks of the Trade applies Backstab damage regardless of facing angle, which means the ability deals pure physical spell damage scaling with agility on every interval. At max agility scaling with multiple items, Tricks of the Trade with high agility is one of the highest burst damage channeling ultimates in the game per second. Most pub Riki players save Tricks of the Trade purely as an escape tool and never use it offensively on a rooted target inside Smoke Screen.
  • Cloak and Dagger grants bonus experience on hero kills AND assists — which means supporting your team's kills as a position four Riki still accelerates your level scaling for Backstab. Do not feel obligated to secure every kill yourself as a support Riki—the assist experience from your team finishing kills you set up counts toward the level multiplier scaling just as effectively as solo kills. Track your hero level obsessively because each level increase is a meaningful flat backstab multiplier improvement.
  • Aghanim's Scepter on Riki reduces the armor of enemies inside Smoke Screen by five and makes them untargetable by allies—which means a support trying to save the hero inside your Smoke Screen with False Promise, Glimmer Cape, or Force Staff cannot target them during the Scepter Smoke Screen duration. The armor reduction makes Backstab hit harder simultaneously. Against lineups with active save supports like Oracle or Abaddon, Aghanim's Scepter Smoke Screen is one of the best counter-itemization tools available, specifically because it prevents the save ability from connecting on the target while Riki finishes them.
  • Most pub Riki players never place their own observer wards as a support Riki and rely entirely on hard supports to provide vision. This is wrong—Riki can place wards from permanent invisibility without ever being spotted, from angles that a visible hero could never safely approach. Cliff wards, deep jungle wards, and high-ground wards that would be suicidal to place on a visible hero are trivially safe for Riki to plant mid-game. Use the permanent invisibility as a warding tool, and your team's map vision will be dramatically better than if you leave it entirely to the pos five.

Summary

Riki is not forgotten by the players who matter—at Immortal rank he is winning 60% of his games in the current patch, making him one of the highest win rate heroes at that bracket, and the Backstab hero-level scaling that rewards mid lane Riki with faster multiplier breakpoints is the specific reason. Immortal players have gravitated toward mid or active roaming four positions rather than passive safe lane carry.

The current meta of intelligence-heavy mids buying large mana pools and fragile supports grouping with minimal detection creates exactly the environment where a 60% Immortal winrate makes complete sense. Plant the smoke screen first. Blink Strike behind the silenced target. Let Backstab do the rest. And make the enemy team spend their entire gold budget on detection they can never place fast enough to catch a hero who was already invisible before they opened their shop.
