Lina

The sibling rivalries between Lina the Slayer, and her younger sister Rylai, the Crystal Maiden, were the stuff of legend in the temperate region where they spent their quarrelsome childhoods together. Lina always had the advantage, however, for while Crystal was guileless and naive, Lina's fiery ardor was tempered by cleverness and conniving. The exasperated parents of these incompatible offspring went through half a dozen homesteads, losing one to fire, the next to ice, before they realized life would be simpler if the children were separated. As the oldest, Lina was sent far south to live with a patient aunt in the blazing Desert of Misrule, a climate that proved more than comfortable for the fiery Slayer. Her arrival made quite an impression on the somnolent locals, and more than one would-be suitor scorched his fingers or went away with singed eyebrows, his advances spurned. Lina is proud and confident, and nothing can dampen her flame.

When to Pick Lina?

Look, Lina is one of those heroes about whom people always have strong opinions—either they love her or they think she is overrated. The truth right now is somewhere in the middle.

She is decent in the current meta, not broken, not weak — decent in the way that a hero with an absolutely enormous skill ceiling, one of the longest attack ranges in the entire game, and a reliable burst combo that can one-shot squishy heroes from a safe distance will always be decent regardless of what the patch looks like.

The really interesting thing about her right now is that she genuinely has TWO completely viable build paths depending on what your draft needs, and most players at average MMR commit to one without ever understanding when to switch to the other.

The magic damage path—Dragon Slave, Light Strike Array, Laguna Blade, building into Ethereal Blade, Blink Dagger, Aether Lens, and Scythe of Vyse—turns her into a pure assassination machine that can delete a single target from across the map in about two seconds if the combo connects.

The physical damage path — leveraging Fiery Soul attack speed stacks and building into right-click items — turns her into a surprisingly durable and sustained damage dealer that the enemy cannot simply stack magic resistance against and ignore.

What makes her interesting is that the removal of facets in the current patch means she now has one consolidated identity, and Fiery Soul giving attack speed and movement speed stacks on spell use is now always available regardless of which build you choose.

She is disgusting in lineups with strong lockdown that can hold enemies in place long enough for her full magic combo to land—Shadow Shaman, Bane, and Disruptor—because a stunned hero standing still taking Dragon Slave into Light Strike Array into Laguna Blade from a Lina at full Fiery Soul stacks is simply not alive afterward.

She thrives against squishy lineups without reliable escape mechanisms—heroes that cannot dash, blink, or teleport away before her burst connects are heroes that die to every rotation she makes throughout the entire midgame. She pairs beautifully with heroes that have global or long-range damage follow-up—Zeus, Invoker—because the burst combo she lands creates a window where the enemy is low enough for a global nuke to finish the job even from across the map.

Avoid picking her into lineups with a lot of BKB-rushing cores in the early game—because a Laguna Blade blocked by BKB into a hero that just right-clicks her to death while she is completely out of cooldowns is one of the most demoralizing experiences available on this hero. Also feels genuinely terrible about Lifestealer, who simply Rages through her entire magic damage output while healing back every last HP she removes and then right-clicks her to death in two seconds.

And if the enemy mid is a melee bully that can walk up to her and trade aggressively in the early laning phase? Lina's below-average armor and mediocre HP pool mean those early trades hurt significantly more than most mid heroes' and can set her behind on a timing she cannot afford to miss.

Tips & common mistakes

  • The magic damage combo is Dragon Slave into Light Strike Array into Laguna Blade — but the order and timing matter enormously. Dragon Slave first to trigger Fiery Soul stacks and deal initial damage, then Light Strike Array stun to hold them in place, then Laguna Blade to execute while they are stunned and cannot dodge. If you cast Light Strike Array first and they dodge, or cast Laguna Blade before LSA connects, you have wasted your entire burst rotation for zero result, and now you are standing in mid lane with no cooldowns and a very angry hero walking toward you.
  • The physical damage build is not a meme build—it is a legitimate second path that confuses the enemy team completely. When the enemy draft has multiple heroes building magic resistance items specifically to counter your magic burst, switching to a physical damage build makes all their defensive itemization completely irrelevant. Fiery Soul stacks give you extraordinary attack speed when you are spamming spells, and with the right attack speed and damage items, the right-click damage that comes out during those stacks is genuinely threatening on a hero with one of the longest attack ranges in the game.
  • Light Strike Array requires you to stand within a relatively short range to cast it effectively—and this is the part that gets Lina killed most often. She walks up to use LSA, misses the stun, or hits it, but now she is standing too close to five angry heroes and dies immediately after landing the best combo of her life because she had no escape plan. Use Blink Dagger to close the distance safely for the combo and then blink OUT immediately after the Laguna Blade connects. Never walk into the combo. Always blink into it.
  • Fiery Soul stacks fall off if you stop casting spells for too long—most Lina players in average games build them up and then immediately waste them auto-attacking creeps in the jungle for fifteen seconds. Once you have full Fiery Soul stacks, immediately rotate to a fight, use the stacks on hero damage, and keep the combo going. Stacks sitting idle on a hero who is farming the neutral camps are stacks that are accomplishing nothing.
  • Laguna Blade has a specific range that most Lina players consistently try to exceed—if you are just barely out of range and you cast it anyway, the ability simply does not fire, and you have used the cooldown for zero result while the enemy hero walks away at full health completely unharmed. Always close the gap first with Blink, make sure you are comfortably within range, and THEN cast. Range awareness on Laguna Blade is the difference between a hero that assassinates constantly and a hero that spends the game standing half a unit outside cast range looking confused.
  • Lina's attack animation is one of the slowest in the game—always animation cancel after every auto attack by giving a move command immediately after the projectile leaves her hand. This dramatically increases her effective attack speed in fights and during the laning phase, and most players at the pub level never develop this habit, costing themselves enormous amounts of damage output across the entire game.
  • Building Aether Lens on magic Lina is not optional—it extends the cast range of every single spell she has and means she can land Dragon Slave from a distance that the enemy mid cannot close before the projectile hits them. The extra range completely changes her laning and rotational safety by letting her deal damage from positions the enemy cannot reach without walking through dangerous territory.

Summary

Lina is decent in the current meta—not the priority pick that Leshrac or Ember Spirit is, but a reliable mid hero with a genuinely high skill ceiling and two legitimate build paths that give her the flexibility to adapt to what the enemy draft is building against her. Magic builds delete squishy heroes in under two seconds from safe range. Physical builds ignore magic resistance and sustained damage through Fiery Soul attack speed stacks.

The ability to switch between these paths depending on the enemy's defensive itemization is something that most heroes in the mid lane simply cannot do, and a Lina player who understands when to go which direction and executes the combo correctly is one of the most punishing mid heroes to face regardless of what patch we are in.

Just stop walking into your Light Strike Array combo without a Blink Dagger—because a Lina standing in the middle of five heroes with no escape after missing her stun is not a burst damage assassin anymore. She is just a tall woman with slow attack animations standing in a very bad position wondering where it all went wrong.
