About
Vici Gaming is one of the oldest names in Chinese Dota 2. They've been around since 2012, produced some of the most iconic rosters the scene has ever seen, nearly died twice, and came back both times. Right now they're in the middle of a genuine revival, and for the first time in years, it actually looks like it might stick.
Early Formation & First Steps
VG was founded in late 2012 by a group of players handpicked from the Chinese ranked ladder, most of whom had no prior professional experience. The early years were spent grinding through Chinese regional events and slowly building a reputation. The turning point came around 2014 when they rebuilt the roster with Black and iceiceice, which immediately started winning—i-League, ESL One New York 2014, and The Summit 2. By 2015 they were one of the best teams in the world, finishing 4th at The International 2015 with a prize of over $1.5 million and runners-up at the Dota 2 Asia Championships after knocking out the heavily favored Team Secret.
Rise and Competitive Breakthrough
The peak years produced a track record that very few Chinese teams can match:
The International 2015: a 4th-place finish—the best TI result in VG's history and one of the highlights of Chinese Dota 2 that year.
EPICENTER Major 2019: Won the tournament with a roster built around Yang, Paparazi, Fade, Ori, and Dy—the last time VG looked like a genuine world-class team before things started falling apart.
ESL Challenger China Season 3 x ACL 2026 (May 3, 2026): Their first title in six years. It's a tier-2 domestic event, but after everything this organization has been through, winning anything felt significant. It also earned them a spot at the Esports World Cup.
Playstyle and Reputation
The current roster is built around some genuinely pedigreed players. Faith_bian is a TI winner from 2016 with Wings Gaming and is considered one of the greatest offlaners the game has ever produced. XinQ joined as a stand-in in March 2026 and brings experience from PSG. LGD and Xtreme Gaming, including a 2nd-place finish at TI 2025. Xm was also part of that Xtreme Gaming TI 2025 run. The roster came together in pieces—Shiro, Planet, and Y moved over from the disbanded Team Tidebound in December 2025, then XinQ and Faith_bian arrived in early 2026 to round things out. It's a patchwork team on paper, but the individual quality is hard to argue with.
Fun Facts
In 2023, VG owner publicly threatened to disband the entire roster if they failed to qualify for TI12. They didn't qualify. The roster was disbanded. Then the organization went quiet for two years.
Fy, one of the most iconic players in VG history, revealed after leaving in 2023 that he hadn't received his salary since joining. Not exactly a great look for the org, but it explained a lot.
Faith_bian originally got into DotA because he saw a League of Legends advertisement that mentioned it was based on the original game. He looked it up, installed Warcraft III, picked Puck on his first game, walked down mid, and immediately quit to pick a different hero. One of the greatest offlaners of all time started his Dota career by going AFK.
