BASED Esports is kicking things off with 1win Essence Season 1—a brand-new $100,000 Tier 2 online tournament running from May 2 to 11 on European servers. It's not a Tier 1 LAN, sure, but don't let that fool you, because we have 6 of the best teams invited for the playoffs, so it makes this tournament kind of Tier 1. Six teams are getting direct seedings straight into the playoffs, while the remaining eight have to fight through a two-phase group stage just to get there. This is exactly the kind of tournament where you see unexpected runs, weird drafts being tested, and teams figuring out what they actually want to play heading into the summer. I'll be covering every match, sharing my analysis before each series, and keeping the prediction accuracy honest—win or lose.

Group Stage Phase 1 (May 2 – May 4) — Eight teams are split into two single round-robin groups of four. All matches are Bo3. The top team from each group goes directly to Round 3 of Phase 2 (the final), the 2nd-place team drops to Round 2, and the remaining two teams fall to Round 1. No team is eliminated yet—everyone gets a second shot.

Group Stage Phase 2 (May 5 – May 6) — This is where it gets brutal. It's a single-elimination bracket, still Bo3. The bottom teams from Phase 1 start in Round 1, the mid-seeds enter in Round 2, and the group winners parachute in at Round 3. Two teams make it out and enter the upper bracket of the playoffs. Round 1 losers are gone—eliminated. Round 2 and Round 3 losers survive, but they drop into the lower bracket of the playoffs.

Playoffs (May 7 – May 11) — The six teams who were directly invited skip all of that and are seeded straight into the playoffs bracket. Combined with the survivors from Phase 2, you get a full double-elimination playoff. All matches are Bo3 except the Grand Final, which is Bo5. The format rewards the invited teams for their status, but it also means the teams that clawed through the group stage will have a shot to cause upsets. Classic setup for chaos.

PARIVISION

PARIVISION

My take

We already saw this match in the upper bracket where PARIVISION won without any issues against 1Win. From what we saw until now, it's safe to say that PARIVISION is just too strong for any Div 2 team out there. By the way, they dropped a single map against SAR (only because they wanted to test some strats).

✓ Aftermath

The 1Win Essence Series is over, and PARIVISION is your champion. They won 3:0, and they are clearly miles ahead of anyone in this tournament. Congratulations and good luck in the DreamLeague. Congratulations to 1Win as well; I did not expect them to reach the top 2. They are a real deal.

South America Rejects

My take

Look, 1Win has been a great story this tournament—Squad1X not dying once on Storm Spirit and Puck, beating Tundra, and beating REKONIX. But SAR just destroyed Nigma 2–0 again, and they've already beaten 1Win 2–1 in the group stage. SAR figured out early on that you don't fight Nigma in the early game—you wait for mid, then punish. 1Win plays a similar style to Nigma (fast mid-game), and SAR knows exactly how to deal with that. DarkMago was absolutely dominant today on Ember Spirit. I'm going to SAR, and this time with real confidence.

✗ Aftermath

Pffffff… This is one of the biggest upsets in the 1Win Series Essence by far. Either I am really underestimating 1Win, or they are a legitimate team. Did you see that Kez from v1olent in game 1? Somehow, 1win managed to nullify the whole team fight from SAR and drag the games to late game. Impressive.

South America Rejects

My take

Well, I've been burned 2 times thinking that Nigma can win against SAR/Playtime. You see, Nigma is strong in the early game, but so is SAR; they are aggressive, but so is SAR as well. So, it kind of nullifies Nigma's whole strategy. This time, after what we saw today, we can rest assured and be confident that SAR will win.

✓ Aftermath

I told you. Right now, it looks like SAR is an Achilles' heel for Nigma, I swear to God. They just can't win against them. More than that, I know that I hype DarkMago a LOT. But the dude is absolutely amazing in the midlane.

Nigma Galaxy

My take

Nigma just 2–0'd L1GA in the lower bracket. Fast Dota, no mercy. REKONIX is sloppy—Jikroy dying solo, taking 4v5 fights, and buying the wrong items on Tiny. They're an upset team; sure, they knocked out YeS in the playoffs, but Nigma is on a completely different level. Unless REKONIX actually bans that Lone Druid AND has a read on Nigma's early tempo, I don't see how they win.

✓ Aftermath

I will never understand teams that are not banning this Kez. If you see that Nigma ALWAYS picks him first, why don't you ban it? Did you think you were going to fight against Kez and win?

South America Rejects

My take

This is a rematch of the group stage opener, and YeS won that one. But SAR has looked like a completely different team since they dismantled MOUZ, went three maps with PARIVISION, and nearly won. DarkMago on mid is a super problem, and if they don't give him the Queen of Pain ban, he WILL punish it. Yellow Submarine is dangerous, sure—Tinker for Rain has been unbelievable, and their comeback in Dota is top-tier. I'm going with SAR, but I wouldn't bet the house on it.

✓ Aftermath

It went exactly as I predicted, except they banned QoP and let DarkMago on Ember Spirit, which was 2 times worse. But, credit where it's due: Congratulations, Yellow Submarine! They finished top of the group stage and sent Tundra home. Congratulations!

My take

OK, so PARIVISION just beat SAR in a dogfight—three maps, came back, and showed they know how to play late game. 1Win is in the top 3, and most of the time, they are going to late games. That's scary. But here's the thing: PARIVISION plays greedy, chaotic Dota, and they always win through skill, not really the draft. Going with PARIVISION, but I'm watching that draft like a hawk.

✓ Aftermath

If PARIVISION plays against a slightly less experienced team, they look unbeatable. Guys, they won with the worst performing carry hero right now, Nature's Prophet. What can you do in this situation?

Tundra Esports

My take

Poor YeS… They were at the top of the group stage; they lost to REKONIX, and now they need to fight against Tundra Esports. Regarding yesterday, I would call it a fluke that 1Win won against Tundra. Let's just say that Lone Druid wasn't nerfed that much and they lost. I still believe that Tundra has a way bigger skill ceiling.

✗ Aftermath

That’s it guys, Tundra is going home. It’s just sad to watch. I don’t even what to say, what you ca say in this situation? They tried a Meepo cheesy pick and still lost because they thought YeS can’t play in early game.

So, I believe 1Win will win this match and get into the top 3.

PARIVISION

My take

I'm really afraid for PARIVISION here. If they draft like yesterday, they can clearly lose, because South American rejects are literally a tier 1 team. But I believe they did that just because they were extremely confident that they could beat any tier 2 with any draft. Today, I believe they will take them way more seriously.

✓ Aftermath

What a dogfight. You know what? SAR could've won that first map because Shadow Fiend was so farmed, but they overextended. They always look for fights, and PARIVISION won because they are just better at counterganking.

The only reason why REKONIX got the second slot in the group stage is because Nigma destroyed the L1GA team in the last match. But I wouldn't say that they got lucky here, because they need to fight against Yellow Submarine, who is at the top of the group stage and looks really strong.

✗ Aftermath

Wow…that was not on my bingo card today. Fbz solo turned the game around on his Lycan in the Roshan pit. Honestly? I did not expect REKONIX to play this well (based on what I saw in the group stage). What is strange for me is that YeS let them pick BOTH times Luna, and they lost to that Luna in both maps.

We already saw this match in the DreamLeague Div last change qualifiers, and SAR destroyed Nigma in the finals (3-0). It's like déjà vu; Nigma is again undefeated in the group stage (they didn't lose a single map). But, somehow, the patch favors them more, so this time I'm going with Nigma to win against South America Rejects.

✗ Aftermath

Yeah, I think South America's rejects understood really well how to play against Nigma. You see, they never take fights in the early when Nigma wants; they fight only in mid-game, and this is smart. This Mars on the mid from DarkMago looks interesting.

Tundra Esports

Very unlucky for 1Win here. The reason why they need to fight Tundra in the Upper Bracket is because yesterday, they played for the last slot. As for the game itself, we don't know how good Tundra is in this patch, but there is a reason why they are top 1 worldwide. I'm going with Tundra to win.

✗ Aftermath

Just disgusting. I don't think that patch affected Tundra Esports; overall the games were super interesting, but when you lose to a Bristleback carry in an overdraft (from my point of view), it's frustrating. It makes me wonder, is Tundra Esports that strong? Because they just lost to a tier 2 team.

✓ Aftermath

Greedy, that's all I'm going to say. I don't think this kind of play style will work against a tier 1 team. I mean, they picked a Huskar in position 4 and still won the game. You realize that they won just because of skill, right? , not that the draft was better.

I told you that L1GA is no joke. The thing is, they did the same thing in PREMIER SERIES; they are beating almost any Div 2 team, and then they are losing in a hard match against the tier 1 teams. They are almost there to fight the big dogs. I think they have a lot of potential to even break into the tier one scene.

Nigma Galaxy

Nigma Galaxy

My take

That's a good match to watch. REKONIX is also no fuss here, but man, they are playing against NIGMA (that just qualified for the DreamLeague Season 29). They didn't lose a single map, and it's hard to go against them.

✓ Aftermath

This rincyq kid is improving every single tournament. And most importantly, he has a big hero pool. Man, he played with Kunkka carry like we are in 2018 and WON. And some facts: Mind_Control is the coach for REKONIX, and Kuro is the coach for Nigma, so we have a reunion for the boys!

South America Rejects

My take

Well, Yellow Submarine doesn't have ATF on the offlane like they did in the PREMIER SERIES. SAR, on the other hand, is just on another level right now. It's a no-brainer going with South America Rejects to win.

✗ Aftermath

Holy moly, SAR just lost to Yellow Submarine. But, in my defense, I will say that they were counter-picked with the Huskar in map 3 and also with the Windranger in map 2. I would also argue that SAR is really fatigued with this much Dota; they played 23 matches before this.

1w Team

My take

The whole match is really under Squad1X's performance. It really depends on how they will draft, but in the end, 1Win is just better on paper than Nemiga Gaming here.

✓ Aftermath

1Win was clearly a better team today. But at least we saw a Necrophos carry from 1 win. And it looks like the Alchemist strategy is working really well in the lower divisions. People can't counter it because they play really slow dota.
